Remote administrator access via username-only JID checks
Published Jan 28, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Authorization bypass in Prosody LDAP modules through 2020-01-27 allows remote attackers to obtain administrator functionality. The mod_auth_ldap and mod_auth_ldap2 is_admin() implementations compare only the JID user part and ignore its domain, so a remote account sharing a local administrator's username passes the check. Exposure requires either LDAP module plus ldap_admin_filter, ldap_admins, or the LDAP admin option; affected requests gain admin-only functions.
