Authenticated command execution via FreeMarker Execute utility
Published Jan 28, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Expression language injection in FusionAuth before 1.11.0 allows remote authenticated users to execute operating-system commands. The email-template preview and theme processors evaluate attacker-controlled FreeMarker expressions that instantiate freemarker.template.utility.Execute and pass an operating-system command to it. Access to edit email templates or themes is required, and successful exploitation runs commands with the FusionAuth service account's operating-system privileges.
