Service hang via ambiguous quoted-string regex
Published Jun 2, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Regular expression denial of service in Faye websocket-extensions before 0.1.4 allows remote attackers to hang a WebSocket service. The Sec-WebSocket-Extensions parser applies an ambiguous quoted-string regular expression to an unclosed value containing repeated backslash-character pairs, forcing exponential backtracking. A crafted opening handshake needs no authentication; on a single-threaded server, parser work blocks other requests and renders the service unavailable.
