Protected-file deletion via symbolic-link redirection
Published May 8, 2020 · Updated Sep 17, 2024
Improper privilege handling in McAfee VirusScan Enterprise for Linux before 2.0.3 Hotfix 2635000 allows local users to delete protected files. A privileged McAfee delete action follows an attacker-controlled symbolic link and removes the link target instead of the intended file. Exploitation requires local low-privileged code execution through a malicious script or program, and the bounded consequence is deletion of files otherwise inaccessible to that user.
