Subscriber-to-Administrator escalation via unchecked users-table reset

Published Jan 16, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024

Privilege escalation in WP Database Reset 3.1 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to gain Administrator access through a reset request. The reset handler accepts the users table without an administrator capability check, deletes every other account, and promotes the requesting account. Subscriber-level access is sufficient, and successful exploitation leaves the attacker as the site's sole administrator.
