Privilege escalation via elevated authentication token generation
Published Jun 3, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Privilege escalation in Elastic Elasticsearch 6.7.0 through 6.8.7 and 7.0.0 through 7.6.1 allows remote authenticated users to gain elevated privileges. The authentication-token workflow combines an attacker-created API key and authentication token, then issues a token with privileges beyond the caller's authorization. Reachability requires permission to create both credential types; the resulting token can access operations assigned to its elevated privileges.
