Application crash via unchecked font buffer offset
Published Jan 8, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Reachable assertion in stb_truetype.h 1.22 and earlier allows remote attackers to crash an application via a crafted font file. During stbtt_InitFont processing, stbtt__buf_seek tests a font-derived negative offset with a fatal assertion instead of rejecting the invalid seek. Exploitation requires an assertion-enabled application to process the attacker-supplied font, and the bounded consequence is an application crash.
