Service crash via TXT record integer underflows
Published Mar 24, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Integer overflow in Videolabs libmicrodns 0.1.0 allows remote attackers to crash a consuming process via a crafted mDNS TXT record. The rr_read_TXT function subtracts an attacker-controlled string length from unsigned remaining-length counters without ensuring that the TXT RDATA contains that many bytes, causing wraparound and an eventual out-of-bounds read. Any network sender able to deliver an mDNS message to a process using the library can interrupt that process; no authentication or user interaction is required.
