CVE-2020-5569

Local privilege escalation via unquoted service paths

Published Apr 20, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024

Unquoted service paths in Toshiba HDD Password Tool for Windows 1.20.6620 and earlier allow local users to gain service privileges. The tool registers Windows services without quoting executable paths that contain spaces, allowing Windows to resolve an attacker-placed executable from a parent path. A local user who can write the searched parent location and trigger the service can execute code with the Windows service account privileges.
