CVE-2020-5214

Code execution via undersized configuration-error buffer

Published Jan 28, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024

Buffer overflow in NetHack before 3.6.5 allows local users to crash the game or execute code via an unknown configuration option. The config_error_add() path formats parser-controlled text of up to 4×BUFSZ into a 2×BUFSZ stack buffer using unbounded Vsprintf. Exploitation requires a suid/sgid installation or a shared host accepting user-supplied configuration files, and successful corruption grants code execution or elevated privileges.
