CVE-2020-5211

Privilege escalation via undersized configuration error buffer

Published Jan 28, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024

Buffer overflow in NetHack before 3.6.5 allows local users to execute code with elevated privileges via a crafted AUTOCOMPLETE value. The config_error_add path formats a potentially 4BUFSZ parser string into a 2BUFSZ stack buffer before truncating it for display. Exploitation requires a suid/sgid installation or a shared system that accepts user-supplied configuration files; malformed input can also crash the process.
