Unauthenticated root command execution via hostname injection
Published Jun 15, 2020 · Updated Sep 16, 2024
OS command injection in the hostname API of IBM Spectrum Protect Plus 10.1.0 through 10.1.5 allows remote attackers to execute commands as root. The unauthenticated POST endpoint /emi/api/hostname single-quotes the supplied hostname but fails to neutralize embedded quotes and shell metacharacters before invoking a system command. Network access to the appliance console on TCP port 8090 is sufficient; successful exploitation grants full control of the Linux appliance.
