Local privilege escalation via unquoted service path
Published Jan 25, 2026 · Updated Jan 25, 2026
Unquoted service path in HTC IPTInstaller 4.0.9 allows local users to execute code as LocalSystem through the PassThru Service. The service registers C:\Program Files (x86)\HTC\Internet Pass-Through\PassThruSvr.exe without enclosing quotation marks, causing Windows to search ambiguous parent-path executable names. A low-privileged local user who can place an executable in a searched parent path gains LocalSystem execution when the automatic service starts.
