CVE-2020-36843Public exploit

Signature substitution via missing scalar range check

Published Mar 13, 2025 · Updated Mar 18, 2025

Signature verification in str4d EdDSA-Java 0.3.0 and earlier allows attackers to create a new valid signature for a known message. EdDSAEngine.engineVerify accepts an Ed25519 signature without checking that scalar s is in the range [0, L), permitting an alternate signature to pass verification. Exploitation requires a previously signed message and signature; the bounded consequence is signature substitution rather than authorization to sign a different message.
