Subscriber-level stored XSS via unchecked widget import
Published Dec 23, 2023 · Updated Apr 8, 2026
Stored XSS in Widget Settings Importer/Exporter 1.5.3 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to inject scripts through widget imports. The ajax_import_widget_data handler accepts a caller-supplied import_file URL, fetches and installs its JSON widget data, and performs neither a capability check nor a nonce check. Subscriber-level access is sufficient; JavaScript in an imported widget executes in visitors’ browsers and can steal an administrator session or redirect visitors.
