Authenticated PHP code execution via PHAR deserialization
Published Jun 17, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
PHAR deserialization in CiviCRM before 5.21.3 and 5.22.0 through 5.24.2 allows remote authenticated users to execute PHP code. The Badge AJAX getImageProp endpoint passes its img parameter through getImageProperties to PHP getimagesize without rejecting phar:// paths, which deserializes attacker-controlled archive metadata. Administrative access and an uploaded image containing PHAR metadata are required; CiviCRM gadget chains then execute arbitrary PHP code on WordPress-hosted deployments.
