CVE-2020-36314Public exploit

External file write via symlink parent traversal

Published Apr 7, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024

Directory traversal in GNOME File Roller 3.38.0 and earlier allows local users to write extracted files outside the chosen directory. The extraction logic in fr-archive-libarchive.c fails to reject an archive entry when a parent path resolves through a symbolic link outside the destination. Exploitation requires a crafted archive and user interaction to extract it, enabling attacker-chosen file writes with the extracting user's permissions.
