SYSTEM code execution via writable OpenSSL configuration
Published Jan 6, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Privilege escalation in affected Veritas Backup Exec Server builds allows local users to execute arbitrary code as SYSTEM on Windows. The privileged service's bundled OpenSSL resolves OPENSSLDIR to a drive-root path and processes an attacker-created openssl.cnf that loads a malicious engine. Local low-privileged access and a subsequent service start are required; successful exploitation grants administrative control over the host.
