CVE-2020-36162

Administrator code execution via planted OpenSSL configuration

Published Jan 6, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024

Local privilege escalation in Veritas CloudPoint Windows Agent before 8.3.0.1+hotfix allows local users to execute code as administrator. Its bundled OpenSSL searches for an absent \usr\local\ssl\openssl.cnf file and loads an engine named by a low-privileged user's planted configuration. The attacker needs local write access to create that path on the Windows system; successful execution grants administrator access to data and installed applications.
