Root code execution via oversized management requests
Published Jun 18, 2020 · Updated Nov 15, 2024
Stack overflow in Cisco Small Business RV Series router firmware allows remote authenticated users to execute code with root privileges. Web-management scripts fail to bound oversized values in crafted requests, causing a stack overflow on firmware 4.2.3.10 and earlier or 1.5.1.05 and earlier, depending on the router family. Administrative access to the web interface is required; exploitation can crash the device or run arbitrary code as root, and internet reachability additionally requires the disabled-by-default remote management feature.
