SYSTEM code execution via installer DLL hijacking
Published Dec 12, 2023 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
DLL hijacking in BeyondTrust Privilege Management for Windows before 23.1 allows local users to execute code during SYSTEM installation. The installer searches user-controlled locations for required libraries and loads a planted Cryptbase.dll from %WINDIR%\Temp instead of a trusted copy. A local low-privileged user must write the DLL before an administrator runs the installer, after which the injected code executes as SYSTEM.
