Process crash via unchecked dynamic-symbol name pointer
Published Aug 25, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Out-of-bounds read in UPX 4.0.0-git-87b73e5cfdc1+ allows local users to crash UPX by decompressing a crafted executable. The PackLinuxElf32::elf_lookup function passes an unchecked dynamic-symbol name pointer returned by get_dynsym_name to strcmp, which reads an invalid address. Exploitation requires a local user to make UPX process the crafted file; the observed consequence is a segmentation fault that terminates UPX.
