Service hang via backtracking in HTML tag stripping
Published Jun 21, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Regular expression denial of service in Prototype 1.7.3 allows remote attackers to hang a JavaScript execution context with crafted HTML. String#stripTags applies a nested, ambiguous regular expression to an unterminated tag containing a long quote sequence, causing excessive backtracking; String#unescapeHTML invokes the same method. A consuming application must pass attacker-controlled text to either method, after which the affected JavaScript thread remains occupied and application processing stalls.
