Authenticated executable replacement for privilege escalation
Published Jun 9, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Improper permission handling in Blizzard Battle.Net 1.27.1.12428 allows local users to gain elevated privileges via Battle.net.exe. The executable grants the Authenticated Users group full control, allowing replacement of the launcher binary with attacker-chosen code. An authenticated local account must write the executable before it runs; successful replacement can execute code with the launcher's higher privileges.
