Unauthenticated external-link launch without user interaction
Published Jul 5, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Improper access control in Rocket.Chat desktop application 2.17.11 allows remote attackers to open external links without user interaction. The Electron client accepted link-opening requests from a malicious Rocket.Chat instance without an explicit permission step, as addressed by the openExternal handling fix. A client must connect to the malicious instance; the demonstrated consequence is unsolicited navigation, with no evidence in the retrieved records of code execution or data disclosure.
