Local privilege escalation via insecure XPC service
Published Jul 15, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Improper privilege management in Acronis True Image 2019 update 1 through 2021 update 1 on macOS allows local users to gain root privileges. The XPC service accepts requests from an unprivileged True Image process without adequate authorization, allowing privileged helper actions to execute as root. Exploitation requires local access to a macOS system running an affected build; the consequence includes arbitrary system changes, data access, and service disruption with no network access required.
