Local privilege escalation via executable replacement
Published Feb 2, 2023 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Improper privilege management in mRemoteNG 1.76.20 allows local users to gain another user's privileges via a replaced executable. The reported mechanism requires BUILTIN\Users to have Modify access to mRemoteNG.exe, enabling a crafted replacement to run when a more privileged user later launches the application. The upstream project could not reproduce that permission state and found only Read and Execute access after clean MSI installations, leaving the claimed condition disputed.
