SYSTEM privilege escalation via updater DLL side-loading
Published Mar 8, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Privilege escalation in Dr.Web Security Space 11 and 12 allows local users to gain NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM privileges. A copied, signed drwupsrv.exe side-loads a malicious version.dll to create an accepted updater configuration, causing SYSTEM-run dwservice.exe to load a planted cryptui.dll. A non-administrative Windows account and the default half-hour update cycle are sufficient to execute attacker-controlled code with full system privileges.
