Application crash via malformed ICO processing
Published Nov 10, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Heap overflow in ICO processing in XnView MP 0.96.4 allows context-dependent attackers to crash the application with a crafted image. The application passes attacker-controlled icon data into the Windows USER32 icon-loading path, where SmartStretchDIBits reads from an invalid address. Exploitation requires a user to open or browse the crafted file, and the documented consequence is an application crash rather than data disclosure or modification.
