Memory corruption via crafted DDS file
Published Sep 16, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Out-of-bounds write in IrfanView 4.54 allows local users to corrupt process memory by opening a crafted DDS image. The 32-bit FORMATS.dll plug-in’s GetPlugInInfo routine writes a byte through an invalid destination pointer while parsing the file. Exploitation requires a user to open the malicious file; the published research demonstrates a user-mode write access violation but does not establish code execution.
