Application crash via unchecked SOA reply length

Out-of-bounds read in c-ares before 1.17.0 allows remote attackers to crash applications via a malformed DNS SOA reply. The ares_parse_soa_reply function advances its parsing pointer after expanding a DNS name, then reads question fields without ensuring that the response buffer contains the required bytes. The path requires an application to parse an attacker-controlled SOA response; the documented consequence is an invalid heap read and service interruption, not data modification.
