Editor crash via tab-count integer overflow
Published Jun 20, 2023 · Updated Dec 10, 2024
Integer overflow in Kilo's editorUpdateRow function allows remote attackers to crash the editor through a crafted tab-heavy text file. editorUpdateRow counts tabs, computes the render allocation size in narrow integer arithmetic, then writes expanded tab characters past the undersized heap buffer after the calculation wraps. Exploitation requires Kilo to open the crafted file; the demonstrated consequence is a heap-buffer-overflow and process abort, not code execution.
