URI spoofing via right-to-left override injection
Published Mar 23, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
URI spoofing in Apple Messages on iOS 12.4 and earlier allows remote attackers to disguise a malicious link in a crafted message. The message renderer honors an embedded Unicode right-to-left override when displaying a URL, so the visible character order suggests a legitimate address while the underlying destination remains attacker-controlled. Exploitation requires the recipient to receive and interact with the crafted link, enabling phishing rather than direct code execution or data access.
