Application crash via unchecked atom buffer allocation
Published Jul 13, 2021 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
NULL pointer dereference in Bento4 1.5.1-628 allows attackers to crash mp42aac by processing a crafted MP4 file. AP4_HvccAtom::Create trusts the atom-declared buffer size and constructs AP4_DataBuffer without handling allocation failure, after which AP4_DataBuffer copies into a null destination. Exploitation requires mp42aac or another Bento4 consumer to parse the crafted file; the demonstrated consequence is process termination, not data disclosure or modification.
