Infotocap crash via odd-length mapping over-read
Published Aug 22, 2023 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Heap buffer over-read in ncurses 6.1 allows remote attackers to crash infotocap through a crafted terminfo source file. The one_one_mapping function advances through the mapping two bytes at a time but tests only the current byte for termination, so an odd-length mapping skips the terminator and reads beyond the heap buffer. Exploitation requires infotocap to process the crafted input; the demonstrated consequence is an AddressSanitizer-detected abort, with no demonstrated code execution.
