Container root escalation via writable passwd file
Published Mar 20, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Privilege escalation in Red Hat MediaWiki before 4.3.0 allows local users with container access to gain root privileges. The image sets mode 0664 on /etc/passwd, making the account database writable to the root group assigned to arbitrary OpenShift container users. Exploitation requires a shell or code execution in the container; the default restricted security context blocks setuid and limits escape to host resources.
