Local file disclosure via XXE in GPX parser
Published Jun 23, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Improper restriction of XML external entity reference in TuxGuitar 1.5.4 allows remote attackers to read local files via malicious GP6 or GP7 tablatures. GPXDocumentReader parses the embedded score.gpif XML with a default DocumentBuilderFactory that permits external entities and remote DTD retrieval, allowing attacker-controlled entities to resolve file and network URLs. Exploitation requires a victim to open a crafted tablature; observed effects include local-file disclosure, internal-service requests, and IP-address leakage, with parsing errors likely visible to the victim.
