Certificate validation in rsync-ssl in Rsync Project rsync 3.2.0pre1 through 3.2.3 allows man-in-the-middle attackers to read or alter data. In OpenSSL mode, the rsync-ssl wrapper checks the certificate chain but invokes openssl without -verify_hostname, so a valid certificate for another host is accepted. An attacker must occupy the network path and present such a certificate; successful exploitation exposes and permits modification of the rsync-ssl transfer.
