Kernel memory corruption via unbounded esWiFi response parsing
Published May 24, 2021 · Updated Sep 16, 2024
Heap-based buffer overflow in Zephyr RTOS 1.14.2 and 2.3.0 allows physically proximate attackers to corrupt kernel memory via SPI. The esWiFi driver's __parse_ssid and __parse_ipv4_address helpers parse module responses without consistently bounding writes to destination buffers. Exploitation requires interference with the physical SPI bus and user interaction; successful corruption permits kernel-privileged code execution.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
