Local privilege escalation via weak folder permissions
Published May 18, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Privilege escalation in MSI Dragon Center before 2.6.2003.2401 allows local users to gain elevated privileges via weak ProgramData folder permissions. The %PROGRAMDATA%\MSI\Dragon Center directory permits overwrite of system files, including the Recommended App binary referenced by App.json, and can be abused to mount an RPC Control directory. A local authenticated user must access the Windows host; successful replacement of a service-loaded binary can provide elevated code execution and system compromise.
