SYSTEM code execution via rollback-directory ACL race
Published Jun 9, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Elevation of privilege in Microsoft Windows Installer allows local users with unprivileged execution to run code as SYSTEM. During rollback, Windows Installer mishandles the C:\Config.Msi directory and its security descriptor, letting an attacker replace protected rollback scripts with malicious content. Exploitation requires local code execution and a crafted failing MSI transaction; the Installer service then processes attacker-controlled rollback instructions with SYSTEM privileges.
