Stored XSS via unsanitized SVG upload
Published May 15, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Cross-site scripting in Submitty through 20.04.01 allows remote authenticated users to execute script in a Teaching Fellow's browser via an uploaded SVG. Submitty stores or serves the uploaded SVG without neutralizing executable script content, so a Student can plant a payload that runs when the Teaching Fellow views it. The attack requires an authenticated Student upload and victim interaction; impact is browser-side confidentiality and integrity loss rather than server execution.
