Device re-identification via unrestricted BLE role exposure
Published May 18, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Information disclosure in COVIDSafe 1.0.17 and earlier allows physically proximate attackers to read phone name and model data over BLE. COVIDSafe activates all four BLE device roles, exposing phone-identifying metadata to nearby BLE peers instead of restricting role access. Bluetooth range and an active COVIDSafe session are required; the disclosed metadata enables device re-identification and can reveal the owner's name.
