Device re-identification via cleartext protocol fields
Published May 18, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Information disclosure in COVIDSafe 1.0.17 and earlier allows remote attackers to identify a device model from cleartext Bluetooth payloads. The OpenTrace/BlueTrace payload transmits unnecessary device-identifying fields without encryption, exposing model-specific characteristics to nearby observers. No authentication or user interaction is required, and the exposed model information enables re-identification, especially for uncommon devices or sparse environments.
