SYSTEM privilege escalation via unrestricted memory mapping
Published Apr 27, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Missing authorization in ATI Technologies atillk64.sys 5.11.9.0 allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges through a driver request. The IOCTL handler accepts a caller-supplied physical address and length, maps those pages, and returns the user-space mapping without restricting low-privileged callers. Local low-privileged access to the atillk64 device is sufficient to read and overwrite kernel process data, including replacing a process token with a SYSTEM token.
