Device takeover via weak password hashing
Published Dec 26, 2022 · Updated Apr 14, 2025
Weak password hashing in CODESYS V3 before 3.5.16.0 allows local users to gain full control of devices containing CmpUserMgr. The CmpUserMgr component stores online-communication passwords with a hashing algorithm that provides insufficient resistance to password recovery. Low-privileged local access to the runtime's stored credential data is required; recovered passwords permit authenticated control of the device.
