CVE-2020-11736

File overwrite via unchecked parent symlink

Published Apr 13, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024

Path traversal in GNOME File Roller 3.36.1 and earlier allows attackers to write extracted files outside the chosen directory. The libarchive backend in fr-archive-libarchive.c follows an archive-created parent symlink without verifying that its target remains inside the extraction root. An attacker needs local access and user interaction, after which extracted files can overwrite data writable by the affected user.
