System crash via unchecked USB descriptors
Published Apr 9, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
NULL pointer dereference in the Linux kernel before 5.6.1 allows physically proximate attackers to crash systems via a crafted USB camera. The Xirlink C-It driver accesses alternate-setting and endpoint descriptor arrays without confirming that the device supplies two configurations and an endpoint. A malicious device must be physically connected; reaching the driver can corrupt memory, while Ubuntu reports the demonstrated consequence as a system crash.
