SYSTEM code execution via unrestricted raw-disk IOCTLs
Published Jun 22, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
Privilege escalation in WinMagic SecureDoc 8.5 and earlier allows local users to execute code as SYSTEM through the SDDisk2k.sys driver. The driver creates SecureDocDevice without an appropriate security descriptor and passes unchecked disk, offset, length, and buffer fields into raw-sector I/O requests. Any limited Windows account that opens the device can read or overwrite physical disk sectors, enabling boot-sector modification and privileged code execution.
