SYSTEM code execution via untrusted DLL search
Published Apr 6, 2020 · Updated Aug 4, 2024
DLL search-path hijacking in Malwarebytes AdwCleaner 8.0.3 allows local users to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges. The application resolves a required DLL through an untrusted search location, allowing an attacker-controlled library to be loaded. Exploitation requires placement of a malicious DLL where AdwCleaner searches and user interaction that causes the affected application to load it; successful code runs as SYSTEM.
